Blazing Saddles

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Blazing Saddles is a 1974 American satirical Western comedy film directed by Mel Brooks, who co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg and Alan Uger from a story treatment by Bergman. The film stars Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, with Brooks himself appearing in two supporting roles, and a supporting cast including Slim Pickens, Alex Karras, David Huddleston, Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn and Harvey Korman. It is built on deliberate anachronisms, including the Count Basie Orchestra appearing as themselves to play a modern song in the Wild West. Released by Warner Bros. on February 7, 1974, the film received generally positive reviews, was nominated for three Academy Awards, grossed 119.6 million dollars against a 2.6 million dollar budget, and is regarded today as a comedy classic.
