There Will Be Blood

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

There Will Be Blood is a 2007 film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, loosely based on Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel Oil!, following Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, a ruthless silver miner turned oilman in early twentieth-century California whose pursuit of wealth and dominance brings him into repeated conflict with a young evangelical preacher, Eli Sunday, in the town where he drills. Its stark, often wordless depiction of the American oil boom and Day-Lewis's intense performance, culminating in a widely referenced final confrontation, established the film as one of the most acclaimed American dramas of its decade. Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 80th Academy Awards, where the film was also nominated for Best Picture.
