The King's Speech

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

The King's Speech is a 2010 historical drama directed by Tom Hooper, telling the story of Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI, and his struggle with a severe stammer. After conventional treatments fail, he turns to the unorthodox Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue, and their sessions and growing friendship carry him through his unexpected accession to the throne following his brother Edward VIII's abdication, culminating in the radio broadcast that rallied Britain at the start of the Second World War. Colin Firth starred as the King, with Geoffrey Rush as Logue, Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth and Guy Pearce as Edward VIII. The film won four Academy Awards at the 2011 ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Firth, and took seven BAFTA Awards including Best Film.
