Gladiator is a 2000 American and British epic historical drama directed by Ridley Scott. The film follows a Roman general who is betrayed by the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, reduced to slavery, and rises through the ranks of gladiatorial combat seeking vengeance for the murders of his family and the emperor. Its screenplay drew on Daniel P. Mannix's 1958 novel Those About to Die. Released in May 2000, it became one of that year's highest-grossing films and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, with a sequel, Gladiator II, following in 2024.
