Gandhi

Gandhi is a 1982 biographical film directed and produced by Richard Attenborough and written by John Briley, dramatizing the life of Mahatma Gandhi, played by Ben Kingsley, from a 1893 incident in South Africa through his leadership of the Indian independence movement to his assassination in 1948. Over 300,000 extras appeared in the film, believed to be the largest number ever used in a single production. Released by Columbia Pictures, it received a leading eleven nominations at the 55th Academy Awards and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Kingsley, and the British Film Institute ranks it among the greatest British films of the twentieth century.
