Amadeus is a 1984 American film directed by Milos Forman, adapted by Peter Shaffer from his own 1979 stage play, which Shaffer described as a fantasia rather than strict biography, drawing loosely on Alexander Pushkin's 1830 work Mozart and Salieri. Set in eighteenth-century Vienna, it is narrated by the composer Antonio Salieri, who recounts his obsessive rivalry with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, torn between admiration for Mozart's genius and a consuming jealousy that drives him toward sabotage. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director, and F. Murray Abraham won Best Actor for his performance as Salieri.
