Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a 1969 American western directed by George Roy Hill, following the real outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known as Butch Cassidy, and Harry Longabaugh, known as the Sundance Kid, as their gang's train robberies draw a relentless posse and eventually push them to flee together with Sundance's companion Etta Place to Bolivia. Told with a wry, comic buddy chemistry between its two leads that was unusual for the western genre at the time, the film treats its outlaws with affectionate humor even as the net closes around them. It was a major critical and commercial success, was selected for the National Film Registry in 2003, and its screenplay by William Goldman is widely regarded as one of the best written in American film history.
