High Noon

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

High Noon is a 1952 American Western directed by Fred Zinnemann, starring Gary Cooper as a town marshal on his wedding day who learns that a criminal he once sent to prison is returning on the noon train seeking revenge, and finds the townspeople unwilling to help him face the threat. Told in close to real time and edited to build tension toward the literal countdown of its title, the film won four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Cooper, and has often been read, including by some at the time, as an allegory for the Hollywood blacklist era in which it was made.
