The Mako Mori test measures the representation of women in film and television by asking whether a work has at least one female character with an independent plot arc that does not exist merely to support a male character's story. A Tumblr user known as Chaila proposed the test as an alternative to the Bechdel test after noting that Pacific Rim, despite featuring a strong female character, failed the Bechdel test's requirement that two named women converse about something other than a man. The test takes its name from Mako Mori, the Pacific Rim character played by Rinko Kikuchi, cited as an example of a non-sexualized female character of color who avoids common action-film stereotypes.
