Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist who, while working at the CERN research laboratory in 1989, invented the World Wide Web, proposing a system of linked hypertext documents accessible over the internet. He created the foundational technologies that made the web usable, including the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), HyperText Markup Language (HTML), and the first web browser and web server software. The web Berners-Lee created went on to become the primary platform through which text, images, audio and video are published and distributed as digital media worldwide, and he later founded the World Wide Web Consortium to steward open technical standards for it.
