Milton Arthur Paul Caniff, born on February 28, 1907 and died on April 3, 1988, was an American cartoonist known for the comic strips Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon. Terry and the Pirates was an adventure strip of the 1930s and 1940s, and Caniff later created Steve Canyon, carrying his style of cinematic storytelling into a second long-running strip. His influence is noted by other cartoonists, among them Eddie Campbell, who lists him among the creators who shaped his own pen-and-ink approach.
