Jerry Springer (1944 to 2023) was a British-born American broadcaster, television host and politician, best known for hosting the confrontational tabloid talk show The Jerry Springer Show from 1991 to 2018. Born in a London Underground station used as an air raid shelter to Jewish refugee parents, he grew up in Queens, New York, trained as a lawyer, and served on the Cincinnati City Council and as mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978. He then turned to journalism, working as a political reporter and commentator and later primary news anchor and managing editor at Cincinnati station WLWT, where he won ten regional Emmy Awards for commentary. His daytime programme is noted as a pioneer of so-called trash television and a cultural phenomenon of the 1990s, and the show was widely discussed in the history of the American talk show. He also hosted a radio talk show in Cincinnati, the talent contest America's Got Talent for two seasons, the courtroom show Judge Jerry and a podcast.
