Lee de Forest was an American inventor whose three-element Audion, patented in 1906 and 1907, was the first practical device able to amplify a weak electrical signal, and became a foundation of electronic radio, telephony and sound film. He built the Audion by adding a control grid to the two-element vacuum tube John Ambrose Fleming had already patented, but for years did not fully understand why his own device amplified a signal. Edwin Armstrong worked out and patented the regenerative feedback circuit that explained and dramatically improved that amplification, filing in late 1913; de Forest then filed a competing claim based on an August 1912 laboratory notebook entry, and the priority fight reached the US Supreme Court twice, which ruled for de Forest in 1928 and again in 1934. De Forest titled his own 1950 autobiography Father of Radio, a title he used for the rest of his life, though most working engineers of his own era, and most historians since, have credited the regenerative circuit itself to Armstrong; the dissent recorded on this page sets out that disagreement. De Forest also pursued sound film: his Phonofilm process, publicly demonstrated from 1923, was one of the first successful sound-on-film systems. He held more than 300 patents over his career.

De Forest's Phonofilm process, demonstrated publicly from 1923, was one of several early competing sound-on-film systems, alongside Fox Movietone and others.
De Forest added a third, grid electrode to Fleming's two-element vacuum tube, creating the three-element Audion triode capable of amplification (US patents 841,387 and 879,532, filed 1906-1907).

Who actually deserves credit for the vacuum tube's amplification mechanism: Lee de Forest or Edwin Armstrong?
De Forest patented the Audion triode in 1907 but, by most engineering historians' account, did not understand why it amplified a signal. Edwin Armstrong worked out the regenerative feedback mechanism that explained and dramatically improved that amplification around 1912-1913. De Forest then filed competing patent applications claiming he had found regeneration first, based on a 1912 notebook entry, and the priority fight over who actually understood the mechanism reached the US Supreme Court in 1934, which ruled for de Forest on narrow patent grounds even though most engineers and historians credit Armstrong's account of how and why the tube amplifies.
What would resolve this The dispute is over documentary interpretation of surviving notebooks and patent filings rather than new data; a historian's definitive reassessment of the 1912 de Forest notebook entry against Armstrong's own dated laboratory notes would be the closest thing to resolution the field could produce.

Armstrong and the engineering community that credited him challenged de Forest's implicit claim, repeated in his own self-styling as Father of Radio, to have originated the regenerative feedback principle that made the Audion a practical amplifier and oscillator. Armstrong filed his own regenerative circuit patent application in late 1913, having worked out and understood the mechanism, and his patent issued in 1914; de Forest's August 1912 notebook entry, which the Supreme Court ultimately credited in 1934, shows him recording a result without recognizing what caused it. Most working radio engineers of the era, and most historians since, hold that Armstrong, not de Forest, actually invented the regenerative circuit, whatever the courts eventually decided on narrow patent grounds.
