Josh Wardle, born in 1982 or 1983, is a Welsh software engineer best known for developing the viral web-based word game Wordle and the collaborative experimental project r/place for Reddit. In January 2022 the New York Times Company acquired Wordle from Wardle for a seven-figure sum. He lives in Brooklyn, New York City, and he was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of the year in 2022. His best-known game reached a very wide audience as a daily puzzle before its sale, so his case shows how a small web project can become a large cultural and commercial event in digital media.
