Frederick Wiseman

Frederick Wiseman is an American filmmaker born in 1930 who has spent decades making documentaries about American institutions, including hospitals, courts, schools and public housing developments. His 1967 film Titicut Follies, an unflinching look inside a Massachusetts hospital for the criminally insane, became one of his best-known works and was added to the National Film Registry in 2022. Wiseman has said he rejects the label of purely observational cinema, explaining that he edits his footage to give each film a deliberate dramatic structure rather than simply recording events as they occur, a method he has applied across a long career as a documentarian, theater director, editor and occasional actor.
