An American entrepreneur who founded SixDegrees.com in 1997, generally credited by media scholars as one of the first recognizable social networking sites. The site let members build a profile, list friends and browse their friends' network, features that became the standard template for the social networking sites that followed, including Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn and Facebook.
