Waltz with Bashir is a 2008 Israeli animated documentary written and directed by Ari Folman, in which Folman investigates his own fragmented and largely repressed memories of serving as a soldier during the 1982 Lebanon War and its aftermath, including the Sabra and Shatila massacre. The film conducts its interviews with fellow veterans as a conventional documentary would, but renders every scene in animation rather than live footage, an approach used to depict traumatic and half-remembered material that Folman felt straightforward documentary filmmaking could not represent. Waltz with Bashir was widely praised for its formal innovation in using animation for serious documentary subject matter and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
