Hearts and Minds

Hearts and Minds is a 1974 American documentary film directed by Peter Davis, examining the Vietnam War and American involvement in it through interviews with military leaders, government officials, veterans and Vietnamese civilians alongside footage of the war itself. Its title comes from a remark by President Lyndon B. Johnson that victory would depend on the hearts and minds of the people fighting the war. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and was later added to the National Film Registry, and it provoked polarized reactions on release, praised by some critics as a landmark of political filmmaking and condemned by others as one sided; filmmaker Michael Moore has credited it as the film that made him want to become a documentarian.
