The Gleaners and I is a 2000 French documentary directed by Agnes Varda, exploring the practice of gleaning, traditionally the gathering of leftover crops from farmers' fields after harvest, and extending the idea to the many forms of modern-day scavenging and salvaging Varda finds across France, from urban dumpster diving to artists who incorporate found objects into their work. Shot largely by Varda herself using a lightweight digital camera, the film is as much a personal essay on aging, memory and creativity as it is a survey of its ostensible subject. It is widely cited as one of the major achievements of Varda's later career and an influential example of the first-person documentary essay film.
