The Battle of Chile is a documentary trilogy by Chilean director Patricio Guzman, filmed in 1972 and 1973 and completed and released between 1975 and 1979, chronicling the escalating political conflict in Chile that culminated in the military coup against President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973. Guzman's crew worked with a single camera, basic sound equipment and film stock donated by the French documentarian Chris Marker. After the coup, the roughly twenty hours of footage were smuggled out of Chile with the help of the Swedish ambassador and edited in Cuba. The film won grand prizes at festivals across Europe and Latin America, was distributed in some 35 countries, and is widely regarded as one of the most important political documentaries ever made.
