Life (Cycle) of the Hong Kong Newt

Life (Cycle) of the Hong Kong Newt is a 2024 Hong Kong short nature documentary directed by photographer Fung Hon-shing and produced by Frigatefilms, released April 1, 2024 on YouTube with no narration, using visuals and an original score by Golden Horse Award winner Wong Hin-yan. Shot over more than forty days across multiple seasons at sites including Fei Ngo Shan and Tai Mo Shan, it follows the full life cycle of the Hong Kong newt from egg to adulthood, including courtship, egg-laying and climbing, and highlights the threat urbanization and roadkill pose during the newts' annual spring migration to breeding grounds. Crowdfunding of about 340,000 Hong Kong dollars for the project also supported a newt roadkill survey with Lingnan University, and the film won the 2024 Earth In Focus Nature Film of the Year award.
