Encounters at the End of the World is a 2007 documentary directed and narrated by Werner Herzog, filmed at McMurdo Station and other sites in Antarctica. Rather than focusing on wildlife, Herzog interviews the scientists, maintenance workers and other researchers drawn to live at the bottom of the world, using their reflections as a springboard for his own philosophical narration on nature, isolation and humanity's place within it. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 81st Academy Awards and is regarded as one of Herzog's most personal nonfiction works.
