Koyaanisqatsi is a 1982 American experimental documentary film directed by Godfrey Reggio, with cinematography by Ron Fricke and an original score by Philip Glass, released with backing from Francis Ford Coppola. The film has no dialogue, narration or conventional plot, instead juxtaposing slow motion and time lapse footage of natural landscapes against images of urbanization, industry and fast paced modern life. Its title is a Hopi word meaning life out of balance, and the film became the first installment of Reggio's Qatsi trilogy, widely cited as a landmark of nonnarrative documentary filmmaking and an influential model for later visual essay style films.
