20 Feet from Stardom is a 2013 American documentary directed by Morgan Neville, following the careers of background singers including Darlene Love, Merry Clayton and Lisa Fischer, who spent decades performing behind famous recording artists while remaining largely unrecognized by the public. The film explores the gap between their musical contributions and their lack of individual fame. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, twenty two years after a documentary about opera chorus singers won the same award, and in 2023 it was selected for the National Film Registry as culturally and historically significant.
