Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse is a 1991 documentary directed by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper chronicling the disastrous production of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, built largely from behind the scenes footage and audio recordings that Coppola's wife, Eleanor Coppola, had shot during filming in the Philippines. It documents a production plagued by a typhoon that destroyed sets, star Martin Sheen's on set heart attack, Marlon Brando arriving overweight and unprepared, and a screenplay whose ending Coppola had not settled by the time cameras rolled. Assembled more than a decade after the events it depicts, it is widely regarded as one of the most candid documentaries ever made about a troubled Hollywood production.
