Italian film director (1919 to 2006) best known for The Battle of Algiers (1966), a documentary-style dramatization of the Algerian War shot on location with mostly non-professional actors. The film has been studied by both revolutionary movements and military academies for its portrayal of urban guerrilla warfare and colonial occupation.
