Zackie Achmat (born 21 March 1962) is a South African activist and film director. He co-founded the Treatment Action Campaign, which became one of the world's most prominent HIV and AIDS advocacy organizations, and also helped found the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality. Achmat directed documentaries including Apostles of Civilised Vice and Law and Freedom, and appeared as himself in the award winning film Fire in the Blood. His activism has drawn international recognition, including a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize nomination and the CDC Foundation's Fries Prize in 2024.
