Jennie Livingston

Jennie Livingston is an American film director, born in 1962, best known for the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, which she directed after years of independent filming within New York City's underground ball culture of the 1980s. The film documents the African American and Latino gay and transgender communities who competed in elaborate costume and dance competitions known as balls, and it is widely credited with bringing that subculture, along with much of its vocabulary and style, to mainstream American audiences. Paris Is Burning won the Grand Jury Prize for documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 1991 and was later selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2016, in recognition of its cultural and historical significance. Livingston's work remains a foundational example of American documentary filmmaking that centers a marginalized community on its own terms, using firsthand interviews and observational footage rather than outside narration.
