Martin Scorsese is an American director who emerged from the New Hollywood movement of the 1970s with films including Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, establishing a body of work often centered on crime, guilt and urban American life. His long collaboration with actor Robert De Niro produced films such as Raging Bull and Goodfellas, and his later work with Leonardo DiCaprio included The Departed, which won Scorsese the Academy Award for Best Director. Beyond directing, Scorsese has been an active advocate for film preservation, founding The Film Foundation in 1990 to restore and protect classic and endangered motion pictures.
