Directors and Filmmakers

Judy Garland, born Frances Ethel Gumm in 1922, was an American actress, singer and vaudevillian whose career spanned four decades. She began performing at two with her sisters as The Gumm Sisters, and at thirteen signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her portrayal of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz in 1939 brought international fame, followed by leading roles in MGM musicals such as Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade and Summer Stock, and dramatic work in A Star Is Born and Judgment at Nuremberg. Her song Over the Rainbow became her signature, and her live album Judy at Carnegie Hall made her the first woman to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. She died in 1969 at the age of 47.
