Tony Gatlif, born Michel Dahmani in Algeria in 1948, was a French film director who also worked as a screenwriter, composer, actor and producer. He settled in France in 1960 and directed his first film, La Tete en ruine, in 1975. From Corre, gitano in 1981 onward his work centered on the Romani people of Europe, whose heritage he partly shared. Latcho Drom, a feature-length musical film about Romani music and dance across the world, won many prizes, and Gadjo dilo, Vengo, Swing and Exils followed. Exils earned him the Best Director Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. He died in Arles in September 2026.
