Sir Sean Connery was a Scottish actor who became the first screen James Bond. Born Thomas Connery in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, in 1930, he left a working class childhood, a spell in the Royal Navy and a string of odd jobs to take small stage and television parts in the 1950s. His breakthrough was Dr. No in 1962, and he played the secret agent in seven films, six for Eon Productions and the last, Never Say Never Again, in 1983. Away from Bond he worked with Alfred Hitchcock in Marnie, with Sidney Lumet in The Hill and with John Huston in The Man Who Would Be King, and he won an Academy Award for The Untouchables. He was knighted in 2000 and died in the Bahamas in 2020.
