John Woo

John Woo is a Hong Kong filmmaker, born on 1 May 1946 in Guangzhou, China, and a highly influential figure in action cinema. He pioneered the heroic bloodshed and gun fu genres, known for stylized action sequences that use slow motion, the so-called bullet ballet and Mexican standoffs, blending influences from wuxia, film noir and the Western. His Hong Kong work includes A Better Tomorrow (1986), The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992). Hard Target (1993) was his American directorial debut, followed by Face/Off (1997) and Mission: Impossible 2 (2000). He later returned to Asia for the two-part Red Cliff (2008 and 2009) and directed Silent Night in 2023. His honors include Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, a Golden Horse Award, a Saturn Award for Best Director and the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2010.
