Jean-Luc Godard

Jean-Luc Godard was a French-Swiss film director and one of the central figures of the French New Wave, a movement that broke sharply with conventional studio filmmaking in the late 1950s and 1960s. Before directing, Godard wrote film criticism for the influential journal Cahiers du Cinema alongside fellow future directors including Francois Truffaut. His 1960 debut feature Breathless became a landmark of the movement for its unconventional jump-cut editing and loose, improvisational style, and his subsequent decades of work continued to experiment restlessly with narrative form, political content and the boundaries of cinema itself.
