Francis Ford Coppola is an American director and producer, a leading figure of the New Hollywood generation of the 1970s, best known for The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, which won him multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture, and for Apocalypse Now, a large-scale and famously troubled production about the Vietnam War. Coppola founded the independent production company American Zoetrope in 1969 to work outside the traditional studio system, and beyond filmmaking he built a significant winemaking business in California's Napa Valley. His family, including daughter Sofia Coppola, has continued his filmmaking legacy into later generations.
