A social networking website founded by Andrew Weinreich in 1997, named for the six degrees of separation concept, that let members create profiles and list friends, family and acquaintances. Media scholars boyd and Ellison identify SixDegrees as the platform where this newer generation of social networking sites began, and it is widely regarded as one of the first sites to combine the profile-plus-friend-list model that later platforms such as Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn and Facebook would build on.
