An animation technique in which puppets, clay figures or other objects are physically repositioned in small increments between individually photographed frames, so that played back in sequence they appear to move on their own. Georges Melies experimented with the same underlying principle around 1899, J. Stuart Blackton's The Haunted Hotel (1907) was the first stop-motion film to receive wide appreciation, and Willis O'Brien went on to pioneer lifelike creature models in films such as The Dinosaur and the Missing Link (1915).
