Mockbuster

A mockbuster is a low-budget film made to capitalize on the publicity surrounding an upcoming major theatrical release, with a name blending mock or knock with blockbuster. Mockbusters are typically produced quickly and cheaply, given a similar title or subject to the film they are riding on, and released direct-to-video around the same time as the major release, sometimes similar enough in title or packaging to be mistaken for it by consumers. The Asylum is the most prominent mockbuster studio, known for films such as Snakes on a Train and Atlantic Rim, alongside companies such as Brazil's Video Brinquedo and Germany's Dingo Pictures, which make low-budget knockoffs of major animated releases.
