Voice of America, VOA, is a United States government international broadcaster founded on 1 February 1942 as part of the wartime Office of War Information, beginning broadcasts in German on 24 February 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda. It is the largest and oldest of the United States international broadcasting services, and by the end of the Second World War it was airing about 3,200 programs a week in 40 languages. VOA stated purpose is to promote understanding of the United States and American values to audiences abroad.
