Wolf Children is a 2012 Japanese animated film directed by Mamoru Hosoda, following a young woman named Hana who falls in love with a werewolf, has two children who can shift between human and wolf form, and must raise them alone in the countryside after her husband's death while protecting their secret and letting each child choose their own path. It was the second original feature Hosoda directed and the first he also wrote, using its fantastical premise to examine the ordinary, often unacknowledged difficulty of parenthood. The film earned about 55 million dollars worldwide and won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2013, helping establish Hosoda as a major contemporary voice in Japanese animated film.
