Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is a 1997 Japanese animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, set in a mythic version of medieval Japan where a young prince becomes entangled in a conflict between forest spirits and an expanding mining settlement. At the time of its release it was the most expensive animated film ever produced in Japan, and it became the highest-grossing film in the country until being surpassed the following year, establishing Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli as major forces in Japanese cinema beyond the animation industry alone. The film was also Miyazaki's first feature to combine computer-generated imagery with the studio's traditional hand-drawn animation, and a subsequent distribution agreement with Walt Disney brought Studio Ghibli's work to international audiences at a larger scale than before.
