The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a 2013 Japanese animated film directed by Isao Takahata for Studio Ghibli, adapting the tenth century folk tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter about a bamboo cutter and his wife who discover a tiny girl inside a glowing bamboo stalk and raise her as she grows rapidly into a young woman pursued by suitors and drawn back toward her true, otherworldly origin. Rendered in a distinctive loose, sketch-like watercolor style unlike Ghibli's usual polished look, the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and, with a budget of roughly 49.3 million dollars, was at the time the most expensive Japanese film ever made. It proved to be Takahata's final completed film before his death in 2018.
