Andrei Rublev is a 1966 Soviet film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, depicting episodes in the life of the fifteenth-century Russian icon painter Andrei Rublev against the violence, famine and Tatar raids of medieval Rus, culminating in a final sequence that shifts to color to show his surviving icons in close detail. The film was heavily cut and delayed by Soviet censors for years before its wider domestic and international release, in part over its unsparing depiction of medieval cruelty. Andrei Rublev is widely regarded by critics and film historians as one of Tarkovsky's major works and one of the greatest films ever made.
