4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, released in Romanian as 4 luni, 3 saptamani si 2 zile, is a 2007 Romanian film written and directed by Cristian Mungiu. Set in Communist Romania in 1987, it follows university roommates Otilia and Gabita as they navigate the dangerous underground world of illegal abortion after Gabita becomes pregnant, arranging a clandestine meeting with a black-market provider under the country's restrictive abortion laws. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, making Mungiu the first Romanian filmmaker to receive the award, and it became the first Romanian film to win the European Film Award for Best Film. Its exclusion from the shortlist for the 80th Academy Awards despite its Cannes win prompted the Academy to reform its foreign-language selection process, and by 2016 the BBC ranked it fifteenth among the greatest films of the twenty-first century.
