A Taste of Cherry

A Taste of Cherry is a 1997 Iranian film written and directed by Abbas Kiarostami, following Mr. Badii, a middle-aged man who drives through the hills outside Tehran seeking someone willing to bury him after his planned suicide, offering the job to a series of passengers he picks up along the way. Shot largely inside a moving car with long, contemplative takes, the film withholds Badii's reasons for wanting to die and instead builds its meaning through the passengers' differing responses to his request. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, shared with Shohei Imamura's The Eel, and is regarded as one of the central works of the Iranian New Wave.
