In the Realm of the Senses is a 1976 Japanese and French film directed by Nagisa Oshima, a fictionalized account of a real 1936 case involving Sada Abe, a former prostitute whose consuming relationship with her employer ended in his death. Its explicit content made it a landmark test case for censorship law in Japan and elsewhere, and Oshima defended the film by arguing that nothing honestly expressed onscreen should be considered obscene. It remains a widely studied case in the boundary between serious artistic filmmaking and legal definitions of obscenity.
