Red Sorghum

Red Sorghum is a 1988 Chinese film adapting Mo Yan's novel, the feature directorial debut of Zhang Yimou and the acting debut of Gong Li, who plays a young woman who comes to manage a sorghum liquor distillery. Narrated through the eyes of the protagonist's grandson recounting his grandmother's story, it depicts peasant life in rural Shandong during the Second Sino-Japanese War and became a defining early work of China's Fifth Generation of directors. It won the Golden Bear at the 1988 Berlin International Film Festival.
