Winter Sleep (2014 film)

Winter Sleep, released in Turkish as Kis Uykusu, is a 2014 drama directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, a co-production of Turkey, France and Germany. Set in Cappadocia, it follows Aydin, a former actor who now owns a hotel and rents property to local families, whose comfortable existence is disrupted when the son of a struggling tenant throws a stone at his car, setting off a cascade of conflicts involving his young wife Nihal's charitable work and his estranged sister Necla that unfold over the course of a long winter and explore class disparity, moral responsibility and marital tension. The nearly three hour film won the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where jury president Jane Campion called it masterful. It was Turkey's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards but was not nominated.
