When Father Was Away on Business

When Father Was Away on Business is a 1985 Yugoslav film directed by Emir Kusturica. Told from the perspective of a young boy named Malik, it follows his family after his father, a low-level Communist official, is sent to a labor camp during the Informbiro period that followed Yugoslavia's break with the Soviet bloc. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
