Throne of Blood is a 1957 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa that transposes the Shakespeare play Macbeth to feudal Japan. It follows the samurai commander Washizu, who murders his lord at the urging of his wife Asaji after a prophecy from a spirit in the forest, and traces his descent into paranoia and downfall when his own soldiers turn against him. Combining the structure of Macbeth with Noh theatrical tradition, it is widely regarded as one of the finest film adaptations of the play and won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Actor, awarded to Toshiro Mifune.
